For may of us from the Drink Long Island team, it was our first experience at a Jimmy Buffett concert at Jones Beach Theater. As we ventured around the parking lot, taking pictures and handing out our Landshark giveaways, we were completely blown away by what we encountered. The party really is in the parking lot.
The arrival times are their badges worn with pride–6 a.m., 2 a.m., and even 10 p.m. the night before to name a few– and are complementary to the tailgate dedication. They explained to us the stories behind the decorations and the ingenious preparations made for their temporary havens. It was madness, these tailgates. These people painted a parking lot into a thriving community and it poured good times.
We were fortunate to have our work passes that let us explore all the theater, both before and during the performances. After finishing up in the parking lot, we spent some time inside, listening to Huey Lewis and the News get the crowd going.
We ended up scoring some seats right before Jimmy Buffett came on, but we also did take advantage of the ability to go backstage and even front row for a bit. Looking out from behind Jimmy, we saw just a wave of people, singing each word to “Margaritaville” and other favorites and dancing smoothly to a beach bum vibe. It was truly an amazing atmosphere to be a part of.
So cheers to you wonderful Parrotheads, for showing us such a good time. The kindness we experienced fully embraced Jimmy Buffett’s ideals and was a break from daily routine. Really though, you cannot help but smile when a man, dressed in a hula skirt and cocoanut shell bra, offers you some of his Landsharks and hotdogs hot off the grill. And this instances occurred at every stop we made. The generosity alone made our experience memorable, and for that we thank you. We look forward to partying with you all at next year’s show.
